Muckraking for Bloggers: From the Investigative Fund

Where: Netroots Nation, Pittsburgh, PA

The Investigative Fund leads the first ever investigative training for bloggers at the annual Netroots Nation conference this August.

How can bloggers and online activists use investigative techniques to break stories and expose wrongdoing? In this two-and-a-half-hour workshop, participants will learn how to use free web tools to trace the assets of public officials, decipher the SEC filings of public companies and the 990s of charitable organizations, file FOIA requests for government documents and much more.

Esther Kaplan, Investigative Editor at the IFUND, will moderate, and panelists are slated to include Bill Bastone, the founder of SmokingGun.com, political blogger Lindsay Beyerstein and former director of Investigative Reporters and Editors Brant Houston.
